Long-Lasting Solutions for a Cleaner Garage

American Garage Floor Systems’ Wauconda showroom illustrates many of the options available in garage floor coatings and storage systems.

A wide range of flooring finishes is available, including 20 types of flake patterns.

While you’ve been stuck at home these past few months, you’ve probably seen a few spots in your home that need some help.

The garage, in particular, takes a lot of abuse, between the daily foot traffic, wear and tear from the cars, and the accumulated junk that gathers in every corner. It’s easy to put off this project, but with a little bit of the right help, it’s a job that can easily be tackled.

The crew at American Garage Floor Systems, 1160 N. Dato Lane, in Wauconda, has spent more than 15 years helping suburban families with durable, long-lasting garage floor coatings and organizational systems.

Don’t let the name fool you, though: this family-owned company serves a wide variety of settings beyond the family garage. Its product works on concrete basement floors as well as warehouses, professional kitchens, schools and factories.

“We can rejuvenate the floor and make it look brand new,” says owner Tim Meade. “Especially now, our coatings are very easy to clean.”

Working with a durable, long-lasting crown polymer finish, American Garage Floor Systems provides an abundance of finishes, from flat colors and custom decorative options to more than 20 types of flake patterns. Logos, such as sports team and business insignia, can be added in, as well.

American Garage Floor Systems works with a low/no-odor finish that can be applied and ready for use within as little as 24 hours. It’s also much more durable than epoxy, says Meade, and it comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Typically, the job begins with a diamond grinder that smoothens the floor. Cracks are patched and the first coat is applied. Flakes or color are added before a top coat goes on, complete with an anti-slip technology that keeps the floors from getting slick when wet. The job is typically done within a day.

“With epoxy, if you start on a Monday, you’d be putting your second coat down on a Wednesday, and then you’re back in the garage on Friday,” explains Meade. “If we do our job starting on Monday, you’re back in your garage on Wednesday.”

Storage solutions often go hand-in-hand with refreshed garage floors, and Gladiator brand garage organizers provide a number of options to keep things clean. These heavy-duty systems include slat walls and sleek cabinets that look nice and maximize every inch of your garage. Various hooks, hangers, baskets and overhead solutions that go along with these units are built to handle everything from sports equipment to garden tools.

“You can see the colors in actual samples in our showroom,” says Meade. “You can come in and learn about the process and see our solutions. It’s really helpful to get a hands-on feel for things.”

The garage showroom complements sister company Reflections in Glass, which shares numerous other ideas for bathroom and home improvements related to glass and mirrors.

With both firms, Meade offers free estimates to customers as far as Belvidere, northwest Indiana, the south Chicago suburbs and southern Wisconsin. Meade and his team bring a deep commitment to customers, reflecting his more than three decades in business.

“We’re family-owned, and we’re going to be around for a long time,” says Meade. “A lot of companies in this industry are here today, gone tomorrow, but we strive for longevity. The people who install for us are employees, not subcontractors.”
