Northwest Quarterly Magazine thanks the Chicago Park District for allowing its Garfield Park Conservatory to serve as this issue’s stunning fashion backdrop. One of the largest and prettiest conservatories in the nation, the eight-room, 4.5-acre plant showcase is often referred to as “landscape art under glass.” Shown on these five pages, in order, are the historic Fern Room, which provides a glimpse of what Illinois may have looked like millions of years ago; the Desert House, with its enormous cacti and succulents; and the Palm Room, a tropical oasis. The final image was captured in the Sugar from the Sun exhibit, which opened in 2008 to celebrate the conservatory’s 100th birthday.
