Janine Pumilia

EDITOR EMERITUS

After two decades of news reporting for daily and weekly newspapers, Janine was thrilled when Bill and Lisa Hughes asked her to help launch Northwest Quarterly in 2004.
Janine previously worked with Bill and Lisa, editing their national business magazines during the ’90s. Before that, she managed a local group of hometown weekly newspapers that included the Rockford Journal, founded by her mentor, the late Bob Stone. That position took her from barnyards to boardrooms throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. In 1995, she received first place for Original Column from the Illinois Newspaper Association.
The Loves Park native earned her B.S. with honors in 1983 from Illinois State University, double majoring in Mass Communication and Political Science. She attended a Bible research college for two years before joining the staff of the daily Springfield Union-News in Springfield, Mass. Today, she happily shares life with husband Gary and their four grown children; a lively network of extended family; horses, dogs, fish and a no-longer-stray cat named Daphne. Janine serves on the board of Healing Pathways Cancer Wellness Center, founded by her late sister, Linda Jones. For fun, she writes fiction, follows politics, cooks, gardens, hosts family gatherings, tramps through the woods, plays Scrabble and pinochle, travels and rides horses with Gary.
