The Adventures of Brad Nordlof

He’s traveled the world capturing serene landscapes, forgotten places and lively cityscapes glowing in the night. Here, the photographer shares some of his favorite images and the stories behind them.

Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, Calif. “I love the ocean and I love all sorts of landscapes,” Nordlof says. “To me, there is so much potential with oceans and water. I got the right twilight, and I liked what was happening with the water. This photo captured such great color. You can never reproduce the same twilight twice.”

A creek in the Columbia River Gorge. “I was able to catch the sun at its best, soft light rising point,” Nordlof says. If I would’ve waited another hour or two, it wouldn’t look nearly as nice. A lot of the things I shoot depend on the weather and time of day.”

Antelope Canyon, near Page, Ariz. “This was a really fun shoot, and walking through the slot caves was amazing,” Nordlof says.

The sun rises over Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near the border between Tennessee and North Carolina.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train head in western Colorado. “I had a long lens, and I was standing right on the track,” says Nordlof. “They were working on the train bearings, smoking it up and having a ball. I showed up by chance, and they worked on that thing for a good hour. I was at the right place at the right time.”

Viewing downtown Chicago from the John Hancock Building, Nordlof captured this gorgeous sunset over the city.
